History of Darien
The history of Darien has been shaped by its location on the shore of
Long Island Sound and on the then main route between Boston and New York, which in the
eighteenth and
nineteenth century was by sailing ships and carriages along the dirt
roads.

The town was incorporated in 1820, and
by the end of the 19th century it was attracting
wealthy New Yorkers, artists and writers to their
glorious summer homes.
With the "new" railroad
connection in 1848,
the charming location of
Darien became viewed
as a haven for year-round
living that has easy
access to New York and other
centers in the North East.
The population has grown from about 1100 in 1820
to just about 20,000 now.

Villager Pond Complex

Architect's offering plan of Villager Pond Complex
Villager Pond
Completed around 1987, the Villager Pond community is located
just off Boston Post Road--near the heart of old Darien--indeed the old Town Hall
once stood on a portion of the current villager Pond complex and another
portion of the
complex was once part of the prosperous Bates Farm. Indeed the
original Bates House is close to the Villager Pond and is is a now
restored
classic New England saltbox, built circa
1736
and named for the Bates family, who built and owned the original
farmhouse, and was later
occupied by the Scofields.
The Villager Pond community is
conveniently located opposite Trader Joes and
within easy walking
distance ( ½ mile ) of Goodwives Shopping Centers
and downtown Darien with it's many shops,
restaurants, cinema, and Metro North Commuter
railroad station and library.
